Parents Hate 3rd grade Science Fair Projects

3rd grade science fair projects are really hated by parents. Science experiments for kids can sure be fun, but is it really necessary for kids in the early grades to participate in science fair projects, even though they are safe and easy?
I say, “NO!” My opinion is that the kids are really too young to do a project. Let’s face it; often the kids can’t even remember to bring their textbooks home. And to have the foresight needed to develop science project ideas into safe and easy science fair projects – well, that’s just crazy!
Why do we have to get them on the track of thinking about their 1st grade science fair project this year, their 2nd grade science fair project next year, and then the 3rd grade science fair projects the following year? Why, why, why? Who created this science for kids idea and made it into a big project where they would have to do their own 1st grade, 2nd grade or 3rd grade projects. Science fairs should not be held for these grades.
The reason is clear. The kids don’t do the work, and the judges and teachers know this is true. The kids don’t come up with science project ideas. They don’t turn these ideas into science experiments for kids. And they certainly can’t make decisions on what are safe and easy science fair projects. So what happens is that the parents end up picking out the project for the kids, or worse yet, the teacher chooses.
We all know how disastrous that can be. Does it contribute to the kids having a strong dislike for school? One will never know unless someone does a study on it. I can hear the headlines in the news right now if the study does get done: Little Johnny Smith’s 1st Grade Science Project Blows Up the School. Or Jessica’s 2nd grade science project was supposed to be in the category of safe and easy science fair projects. But find out why she’s in the hospital now. Or Jamal thought his mom would love his science fair projects for 3rd grade but find out why he got kicked out of school for it. Tonight on the 10:00 news.
It is imperative that 1st grade, 2nd grade and 3rd grade science fair projects are safe and easy science fair projects. First through third graders just can’t look ahead and foresee danger yet. That ability is developed later in life.
So give them a hand with the science project ideas this year. And know that science for kids – well, even science experiments for kids – really can be fun. Make it into an entertainment of some sort and you’ll live another few years without harm!

Nice...blessed with science.
I was not blessed with Science Fair projects 'til high school, and by then it was far too late to interest kids in science who had not been exposed to it. I absolutely agree with the need for keeping it very simple for the younger ones, though.
I have been reading your series on Science Fair Projects and I find then extremely interesting. I don't have kids but am sure many parents find them useful too.
Good job Owen.
